This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) with a $70,000 salary and two weeks (10 days) vacation.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Specialist will play a central role in shaping how Momentum communicates with supporters, partners, media, and the broader public. This role is responsible for delivering strong, strategic, and high-quality communications that advance advocacy goals, support organizing and campaign work, strengthen Momentum’s brand, and help grow the organization’s reach and impact across Canada.

This position is suited to someone who is politically aware, strategically minded, highly organized, and deeply committed to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and issues. The successful candidate will bring strong judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist will:

  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of organizational communications strategies, advocacy communications plans, and campaign communications, ensuring communications are accessible, audience-aware, and aligned with Momentum's values, voice, and strategic objectives.
  • Manage Momentum’s communications calendar and coordinate messaging across campaigns, events, partnerships, advocacy moments, fundraising efforts, and organizational priorities.
  • Draft, edit, and refine a wide range of written materials, including media releases, public statements, social media content, newsletters, website copy, briefing notes, speaking notes, campaign materials, and fundraising communications.
  • Develop high-quality visual communications materials and digital assets that support Momentum’s advocacy, organizing, and public engagement work.
  • Help lead and execute larger advocacy and campaign-based communications efforts, including rapid response communications tied to political developments, emerging issues, and public debates.
  • Support philanthropic and fundraising efforts through strong donor-facing communications, campaign materials, impact storytelling, and other communications assets.
  • Support and strengthen Momentum’s brand across platforms and materials, including through visual consistency, message discipline, design development, and participation in rebranding or brand refinement processes.
  • Coordinate and maintain content pipelines across digital channels, including social media, email communications, and website updates.
  • Provide basic website maintenance and web content support, including updating pages, posting content, and helping ensure public-facing information remains current, clear, and on-brand.
  • Work closely with leadership and staff to translate advocacy, organizing, campaign, and movement priorities into compelling public-facing communications.
  • Monitor the media, political, and advocacy landscape to identify narrative trends, strategic opportunities, emerging risks, and timely openings for public engagement.
  • Support media relations work, including drafting materials, preparing spokespeople, tracking coverage, and helping manage inbound media requests.
  • Support internal coordination and communications administration, including content organization, approvals, timelines, asset management, and light reporting or tracking as needed.
  • Contribute to evaluation, planning, and fundraising by helping document communications outcomes, audience growth, campaign performance, and other key performance indicators.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in communications, journalism, digital media, nonprofit communications, advocacy communications, political communications, or a related field.
  • A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to 2SLGBTQIA+ issues, communities, and movements, and the ability to communicate about these issues with clarity and depth.
  • A deep commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism, and social justice.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling, strategically sound communications for different audiences and platforms.
  • Strong visual communications and design skills, with the ability to create polished, effective, and accessible public-facing materials.
  • Experience with communications planning, editorial or content calendar management, and coordinating communications across multiple priorities and streams of work.
  • Experience communicating in politically sensitive or contested environments, including around human rights, public debate, or misinformation.
  • Experience supporting or managing advocacy-based, campaign-style, or public affairs communications.
  • Strong political acuity and sound judgment, including the ability to understand how public narratives, stakeholder dynamics, media environments, and current events shape communications choices.
  • Experience working in fast-paced environments with tight deadlines, shifting priorities, and rapid response needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, close attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Experience with website content management and basic web maintenance.
  • Experience participating in or supporting branding, rebranding, or design development processes is a strong asset.

Momentum is seeking proposals from qualified communications and design firms or independent practitioners to lead a comprehensive rebrand. This includes the development of a new visual identity, refined messaging framework, and a suite of practical tools and assets to support both day-to-day communications and high-impact advocacy work.

This work is being undertaken alongside the launch of a new strategic plan. As Momentum enters its third year, the organization is experiencing rapid growth and increased national visibility. This rebrand is intended to define its next phase of development and position Momentum clearly as Canada’s leading 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy organization.

The selected partner will be expected to deliver a cohesive and adaptable brand system that reflects the organization’s role in shaping public discourse and mobilizing communities. Proponents have an option to include the development of a new Wordpress-based website. See Appendix A for further details.

In January, we launched a micro-grant program to help power-up grassroots advocacy and community building in Alberta, as part of our response to Premier Danielle Smith’s attack on the freedom, rights and healthcare access of transgender youth and their families. We received dozens of applications, reflecting the commitment, strength and creativity of 2SLGBTQIA+ advocates and allies across Alberta.

We are now thrilled to introduce you to the 12 projects we’re funding across the province.

Each group has it's own vision and unique flavour. Some are fully focused on activism and political advocacy, while others are focused on building inclusive spaces and fostering community care. The range of initiatives reflects something our communities have long known: it takes a village to build and sustain a movement. It takes protesting in the streets, and community spaces that foster queer joy and healing.

We're proud to play our part in sustaining vital advocacy and community building in Alberta.
