Statement: NB Election results show that attacking LGBTQ+ people brings political defeat

Premier Blaine Higgs scapegoated and attacked the rights of trans people in New Brunswick. Last night he lost power. Voters have spoken and they decided that fear and hatred are not the way forward.

OTTAWA – Fae Johnstone, Executive Director of the Society of Queer Momentum, made the following statement in response to the New Brunswick General Election results:

“Premier Blaine Higgs scapegoated and attacked the rights of trans people in New Brunswick. Last night he lost power. Voters have spoken and they decided that fear and hatred are not the way forward. We expect the incoming government will reverse Higg’s changes to Policy 713, putting an end to this chapter of attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

The focus now shifts to Saskatchewan, where the LGBTQ+ community, parents, allies and others look to defeat Premier Scott Moe’s anti-trans government on October 28. This is the same day Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is expect to introduce new anti-gay and anti-trans legislation.

Momentum will always oppose any government that tries to undermine people’s rights and freedoms. I want to thank the people of New Brunswick for voting for Rainbow Equality.”
