Our Impact in 2023

In May 2023, we introduced ourselves as a new non-profit organization working to accelerate social and gender justice for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. As this calendar year comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the impact we’ve had in our first 9 months of operations.

First and foremost, we want to thank you – our friends, donors and partners – for supporting our work. Whether you’ve donated, partnered with us on a campaign, signed a petition or shared our advocacy efforts on social media, your support has meant the world. We want to give a special shout-out to our friends at CUPE and PSAC who made significant contributions that have helped power our advocacy.

Here’s what your support has helped us achieve in 2023. With a volunteer board of directors and one part time employee, we’ve made a tremendous impact. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished. We hope you are too. In just 9 months we:

  • Mobilized over 11,000 people across Canada to challenge hate and pressure governments on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues.
  • Created and launched the #Act4QueerSafety campaign alongside over 100 civil society partners urging the Government of Canada to take real action to address rising hate. Over 5000 people signed this petition.
  • Launched a formal House of Commons petition calling on the federal government to implement 29 policy recommendations that would materially advance equality for trans and gender diverse Canadians. As part of this campaign, we hosted a press conference on Parliament Hill with MP Randall Garrison urging the Government of Canada to take action. To date, the petition has received almost 6000 signatures.
  • Co-developed a groundbreaking guide to help advocates and allies strengthen our message on school inclusion for transgender students.
  • Tapped in and supported advocacy efforts in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan, doing what we could to support local advocates on the frontlines, including launching a petition urging Premier Moe in Saskatchewan to stop picking on trans students, and a letter writing campaign in New Brunswick with a similar message.
  • Worked with Ottawa-based organizations to sound the alarm about rising anti-queer hate in Ottawa and across Canada through a press conference at city hall.
  • On behalf of Queer Momentum, our President and board members spoke at events, rallies and in workplaces across Canada to raise awareness about rising hate, empower advocates and build a momentum for 2SLGBTQIA+ equality.
  • Reached hundreds of thousands of people across Canada through social media and news coverage. We were mentioned in over a dozen news articles, numerous radio shows and our President spoke out against rising hate on national television three times in just 9 months.
  • Began connecting local 2SLGBTQIA+ advocates from across Canada through monthly virtual gatherings to share knowledge, build capacity and enhance coordination.
  • Brought together representatives from national queer organizations for a day of strategizing, which led to ongoing virtual gatherings to support a coordinated and strategic response to rising hate.
  • Supported other partner organizations efforts, including the White Ribbon campaign, and InsideOut, the S2LGBTQ+ Film Festival.

The Society of Queer Momentum’s future is bright because of your support.  The campaign against rising hate grows each month.

From all of us at Queer Momentum, thank you.

Momentum is seeking proposals from qualified communications and design firms or independent practitioners to lead a comprehensive rebrand. This includes the development of a new visual identity, refined messaging framework, and a suite of practical tools and assets to support both day-to-day communications and high-impact advocacy work.

This work is being undertaken alongside the launch of a new strategic plan. As Momentum enters its third year, the organization is experiencing rapid growth and increased national visibility. This rebrand is intended to define its next phase of development and position Momentum clearly as Canada’s leading 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy organization.

The selected partner will be expected to deliver a cohesive and adaptable brand system that reflects the organization’s role in shaping public discourse and mobilizing communities. Proponents have an option to include the development of a new Wordpress-based website. See Appendix A for further details.

In January, we launched a micro-grant program to help power-up grassroots advocacy and community building in Alberta, as part of our response to Premier Danielle Smith’s attack on the freedom, rights and healthcare access of transgender youth and their families. We received dozens of applications, reflecting the commitment, strength and creativity of 2SLGBTQIA+ advocates and allies across Alberta.

We are now thrilled to introduce you to the 12 projects we’re funding across the province.

Each group has it's own vision and unique flavour. Some are fully focused on activism and political advocacy, while others are focused on building inclusive spaces and fostering community care. The range of initiatives reflects something our communities have long known: it takes a village to build and sustain a movement. It takes protesting in the streets, and community spaces that foster queer joy and healing.

We're proud to play our part in sustaining vital advocacy and community building in Alberta.

Like all Canadians, we were shocked to learn of the horrific shooting in Tumbler Ridge. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy.

Queer Momentum joins Canadians from coast to coast to coast in condemning this appalling violence, which has no place in our schools or anywhere else in Canada.

We are mindful that news cycles can create fear and vulnerability. We reject any attempt to tie an entire community to the actions of one individual.

Our focus remains on the victims, their families and the community. We stand ready to assist our neighbours in Tumbler Ridge however we can.
