Stop the Deportation of a Gay Ugandan Refugee Claimant

Alongside our friends at Dignity Network Canada, The Society of Queer Momentum is urging Minister Miller to intervene in the impending deportation of a gay Ugandan refugee claimant name Sue. Continue reading to learn more about the situation and how you can help.

Sue (File Number: 11-1476-8484) is a gay Ugandan refugee claimant living in Edmonton, Alberta. Sue is facing a deportation order because Border Services Canada doesn’t believe he is gay. Without an intervention by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Sue will be deported by Monday, December 18th.

Sue needs to maintain his privacy because of the possible repercussions if he is outed at home. His identity as a gay man has been confirmed by Frank Mugisha, a prominent gay Ugandan activist. He is represented by a respected Canadian immigration lawyer with expertise in LGBTIQ refugees, Battista Migration Law Group. His lawyer made a request to defer his deportation, but on December 12th, this request was denied.

We are very concerned about Canada deporting him in light of the situation for LGBTIQ people in Uganda given the passage and implementation of the anti-LGBTIQ law.

We're Hiring: Communications Specialist

The Society of Queer Momentum is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist to help lead the organization’s communications, campaigns, and public profile. This is a one-year contract, with anticipated start date in early June 2026

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) with a $70,000 salary and two weeks (10 days) vacation.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Specialist will play a central role in shaping how Momentum communicates with supporters, partners, media, and the broader public. This role is responsible for delivering strong, strategic, and high-quality communications that advance advocacy goals, support organizing and campaign work, strengthen Momentum’s brand, and help grow the organization’s reach and impact across Canada.

This position is suited to someone who is politically aware, strategically minded, highly organized, and deeply committed to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and issues. The successful candidate will bring strong judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-moving environment.
